Are you scared of flying?
Yes and no... I have a fear of heights, but if I took enough Dramamine to sleep through most of the flight, I think I'd be ok.
What jewelry do you wear all the time?
I always wear my wedding ring.
Are you left handed?

Like lift the fork up to my chin?
Ever been in a car wreck?
Not a bad one, mainly just fender benders here and there.
Do you own slippers?
Yep

Self Portrait
OK, so I've neglected my blog lately. I have just not been inpired to create much here lately. Most of the swaps I've done recently are written word, not really artistic. So I forced myself to dig out my inspiration can... but never bothered to open it.
Instead I decided to check my email. While logging on to Yahoo, I caught site of a news video. ABC News did a blurb about an artist who paints his face differently every day. They did not give his name, but showed a few of the photos of his face paint.
I decided to do some research and found his name- James Kuhn. He has some really awesome pictures and videos on his Flicker page. You can visit it here.
I have painted my face before. For Halloween a couple of years ago, I did the full face-paint of a sun and moon seen above. I paint the kids' faces for Halloween and special occasions as well.
With James' work as inspiration, I decided that I needed to do another set of self-portrait shots with facepaint. Below are a few of those photos. I still need to edit and play with the colors on a few more of them, but you get the general idea.

100 Ways to Live Green
The broad definition of "green living" is any action or activity that results in a positive impact, to any degree, on the environment so that the planet can continue to support future generations.
- Invest in a good reusable sports bottle- Refill it with filtered water rather than buying bottled water.
- Collect and recycle your soda cans.
- Read the newspaper online or at your local library rather than buying your own paper copy.
- Recycle your junk mail.
- Turn off the lights when you leave a room.
- Unplug the coffee pot rather than leaving it on a timer.
- Wash your laundry in cold water- it takes less energy to heat the water.
- In warm weather, use a clothes line rather than the dryer.
- Use power strips- flip the switch off when you are not using those appliances.
- Set up your own compost bin or pile.
- Only wash "full" loads of dishes and laundry- partial or small loads use as much water as a full load.
- Turn off the tap water while you brush your teeth.
- Choose products in pump-spray bottles rather than aerosols.
- Collect "grey" water, such , dishwater and bath water, for plants and gardens.
- Use a rain barrel under downspouts and guttering to collect water for watering.
- Switch to energy saving compact fluorescent light bulbs.
- Reuse cereal boxes and other food packaging for storage, craft projects, pet cage liners, etc.
- Carry reusable shopping totes rather than use those plastic bags from stores.
- Throw an extra blanket on the bed rather than turn up the heater in the winter.
- Check and clean the filters on your heater and air conditioner units regularly- they will run more efficiently.
- Mow the grass less often. Rather than mowing every two weeks- mow it once a month.
- Plant a tree.
- Join your local "FreeCycle" mailing list- It's much better to give away something that still has a use rather than sending it to a landfill.
- Cover your swimming pool when you aren't using it- this will cut down on evaporation and will reduce the amount of water needed to refill it to capacity.
- Check for leaky pipes and faucets. Make sure that the taps are fully closed and not dripping.
- Pack your lunch. Using re-usable containers, such as bentos, will save on disposable packaging. It's also a healthier, and more efficient than running to the local burger-joint.
- Reuse packing supplies, such as boxes, bubble wrap, and packing peanuts.
- Choose products, like printer paper, envelopes, and stationary that are created from recycled products.
- Walk or ride a bike for local errands, rather than drive.
- Ride the bus or carpool whenever possible.
- Choose electronic devices that can be recharged rather than using disposable batteries.
- When charging electronics, unplug them as soon as they are fully charged. Unplug the chargers when not in use.
- Donate what you don't need. There are all sorts of charities that can use things like clothing, furniture, cell phones, even light fixtures and carpeting. Consider donating items rather than discarding them.
- Use a USB "Flash" drive or other memory cards to transfer data rather than single-use writable CDs.
- Opt for online-billing and bank statements, rather than paper versions when possible.
- Plant a garden for fresh vegetables or shop at local farmer's markets rather than buy fruits and vegetables at the big-box chain stores.
- Only buy what you need- don't spend money for computer upgrades, or electronics with capabilities that you won't be using.
- Reduce fuel-fume emissions by filling the tank in early morning and late evening, when the temperature is lower.
- Buy a re-manufactured ink jet cartridge rather than new- or better yet, learn to refill it yourself.
- Choose recyclable paper plates, cardboard containers, and aluminum foil rather than Styrofoam for take-out, picnics, or large gatherings.
- Play a board game or card game with your family rather than let the kids play video games. You save energy and build a stronger bond.
- Check out books from your local library or shop a used bookstore rather than purchasing a new copy.
- Consider joining a community fitness club rather than spending money on your own exercise equipment or pool. This will save money and reduce the waste when you need to upgrade equipment.
- On a budget? Work out at home. Choose a workout like Pilate's or yoga that doesn't require lots of equipment or room. You can also look for used equipment or eco-friendly alternatives such as bamboo mats.
- Skip the treadmill. Take a walk outside or run at the local track.
- Skip the stationary bike. go for the real thing instead.
- Can't give up the treadmill or stationary? Hook them up to a generator kit to power your ipod or cell phone charger.
- Choose paper-less ticketing for concerts, events, and airline fares.
- Purchase re-chargeable gift cards rather than mailing larger gifts for birthdays and Christmas.
- Buy products with less packaging- Select products with minimal packaging or larger/bulk items that have less packaging per unit.
- Read labels! Look for products that are certified by the USDA, PETA, WWF, or other notable organization. Just because is says "natural" or "organic" does not mean it really is.
- Use a fan in warm weather instead of running the AC.
- Eat less meat. It takes a lot of water, feed, and energy to raise meat-animals.
- Bring your own mug to the local coffee shop or work. Just wash, rinse, and reuse.
- Set up a household recycling center- Use bins and boxes to collect and sort paper, glass, and aluminum from non-recyclable trash.
- Open the curtains or blinds rather than use lights during the day.
- Use a digital camera rather than traditional film or disposable cameras.
- Reduce your hot water heater to 120 degrees and use an insulation blanket around it.
- Shop for necessities rather that wants. Re-Think before you buy- are you purchasing something just because you want it or because you actually have a use for it?
- Talk to your kids about environmental issues. The more they know, the more likely they are to grow up living green
- Make sure your car tires are properly inflated and the engine is in good repair. This save gas mileage and emissions.
- Plan your meals in advance. Going to the grocery store just once a week saves time and energy.
- Limit kid's time in front of the TV. Set a timer. When time's up turn it off and choose another activity such as reading a book or playing outside.
- Remember that kids don't need a lot of toys. Challenge them to make their own playthings from reusable items. They can build forts from boxes, rhythm shakers using rocks and soda bottles, or paper airplanes from junk mail. Check the Internet for TONS of other craft and toy ideas using recycled materials.
- Use washable cloths for messes rather than disposable paper towels.
- Install a low-flow shower head.
- Turn off the computer monitor rather than watching the screen-saver.
- Upgrade to a quality razor with disposable blades. Plastic single-use razors are not recyclable.
- Use both sides of the paper when writing or printing.
- Choose makeup compacts that feature refillable trays rather than disposing of the whole thing.
- If you use pump-style lotion or soap dispenser bottles, refill them rather than purchase new ones.
- Eat-in or Carry-Out rather than Drive-Thru. Don't idle- if you expect the wait to be longer than 2 minutes, shut the engine off.
- Reduce your shower-time. Wash your hair every-other shower. Turn the water off while you lather or shave. Consider skipping the shower once a week.
- Remove unnecessary items from your car to decrease weight and save gas.
- Only water your lawn when necessary- Use a timer on sprinkler systems. Make sure you are watering the lawn, not the street or sidewalk.
- Install a low-capacity toilet. Choose one that uses less water. If you can't replace the toilet, place a clean brick or two in the tank- this will displace water in the tank and reduce the amount used with each flush.
- Try a "family bath night." Run just one tub of water. Bathe all the kids in the same water... you can add just a bit of hot water to warm it up in between or just bath them together at the same time. For bonus points, bathe the dog after you've bathed the kids. For couples, try sharing the shower.
- Do away with balloons. Consider biodegradable crepe paper decorations instead. Use sponges soaked in water buckets rather than water balloons.
- Don't make traditional birthday party "treat" bags. Try ready-to-plant seedlings, sea shells, recycled crayons, or craft projects made from recycled materials. Wrap them in washable fabric snack bags instead of plastic or cellophane.
- Set up an outdoor bird feeder.
- Carry an empty bag with you on your walks. Pick up litter on your way. Not only are you cleaning up, you are getting a great workout.
- Teach kids not to run the tap full open when washing hands. A pencil-thin stream is sufficient to rinse the soap off.
- Switch to environmentally friendly cleaners or mix your own. Baking soda and vinegar work wonders! Check the net for recipes for other alternative cleaners.
- Going away for the weekend? Unplug your house. Unplug all non-essential appliances and turn down the heating or air conditioning.
- Opt for wooden or organic fabric toys instead of plastic.
- Make your own baby food. Rather than investing in lots of little glass jars or single-use plastic trays, purchase a food processor. You can blend up small portions of veggies and meats from your family meal. One plus with this idea is that your baby will get used to your cooking and transitioning to table foods will be easier.
- Trade the myriad of skin care products on your vanity for the necessities. All you need is a basic cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and broad-spectrum sunscreen.
- Choose petroleum-free health products. Try beeswax lip balm and lanolin based lotions. Pure olive oil is better that scented baby oil.
- Dispose of chemicals, unused medications, and toxic liquids properly. Don't flush them or pour them down the drain.
- Go to bed. Most people who claim they can't sleep simply don't try. Turn off the TV, darken the room, and lay down. It's been proven that if you turn the TV off an hour earlier, you will sleep better. Another plus- if you are well-rested you are more likely to have the energy to do things like hang out the laundry rather than shoving it in the dryer.
- Look for natural alternatives for pet care products, such as lavender oil instead of chemical flea control.
- When buying new clothing or bedding, look for organic products, such as organic cotton, wool, or bamboo fiber.
- Shop for fair-trade food products, such as coffee and chocolate.
- Stop smoking. This is a no-brainer. Second-hand smoke is one of the most common household pollutants. Cigarette butts are not bio-friendly. Quitting is not only good for the environment, it's good for your health.
- If you like to burn candles in your home, switch to beeswax or soy based candles which are usually scented with natural oils. Paraffin wax is petroleum-based. Also look for candles with wicks made of hemp, recycled cotton, or paper fiber.
- Use a washable filter in the coffeemaker rather than single-use paper ones.
- Vote Green- Contact your congressmen with your environmental concerns. Research current issues and be informed.
- Send a Christmas e-mail rather than the traditional card/letter.
- Consider ordering pay-per-view movies through your cable company or watching movies through a subscription service on the Internet. You'll save the cost of DVD manufacture, packaging, shipping costs, and fuel to/from the video store. Think about it- even NetFlix uses packing materials and shipping.
- Just say No! The manufacture of illicit drugs creates a myriad of toxic chemicals that are harmful not only to the environment, but to humans.
I thought of some other non-traditional ways to live green as well. These aren't necessarily for everyone, but for those who choose them, the rewards are great.
- Expecting a baby? Choose a home birth. Not only will you be more comfortable in your own home, there is a significant reduction in medical waste. Think about all the energy consumed by all those monitors and machines. (Disclaimer: this is not intended to replace the advice of your health care professional! Please consult your OB, doula, midwife, etc. before making this decision.)
- Try cloth diapers. I admit- this one isn't for everyone- I personally don't do cloth. However washing and reusing is more environmentally sound than disposable.
- Consider becoming a TV-free family. Lots of people don't even own televisions. My husband refuses to completely do away with the television, but we have reduced the time spent with it on. Think about it- is your TV on just for noise or are you actively watching it? If you're not watching, turn it off.
- Set up a clothing swap with your friends, neighbors, and family. Instead of shopping for new stuff, trade with others. Kids seem to out-grow their clothes so quickly. Hand-me-downs save money and manufacturing. This works especially well when the other kids near the same ages as your children and they share similar fashion sense. You can also swap books, games, and toys that your kids are bored with.
- Stop dyeing your hair. Once again, I don't live by this one... I can't seem to give it up completely. But considering all the chemicals contained in hair dye, I've tried to reduce the frequency.
- Not all of us can afford a new car. If you do go car-shopping, look toward a hybrid or a vehicle that uses bio-fuel rather that traditional gasoline. Bypass the huge gas-guzzling SUVs.
- No one likes to think about their own death, however now is the time. With increasing earth-awareness, more eco-friendly funeral alternatives are developing. Traditional caskets contain chemically treated wood and toxic metallic paints. Newer ideas include recycled cardboard, jute, and bio-degradable urns. In the US, there are laws regarding time limits on an un-embalmed body (most must be buried or cremated within 24 hours). Modern crematoriums reduce emissions and offer a cheaper, cleaner alternative to embalming. Contact your local funeral home or research the net for more options for a green funeral.
- The decision to have, or not have children is a deeply personal one. One of the major considerations before having a child (or another child) should be the economics of such. Not only must you consider how your family will fare financially with another mouth to feed, but how much more stuff that you are going to need to support this child. The truly eco-conscious family must face the fact that every person, from the newborn to the aged has a carbon foot print.
March is Roaring Like a Lion!
Well, after having mild weather earlier this month, March has decided to roar like a lion here in Oklahoma. Just a couple of weeks ago, we were wearing shorts and T-shirts. Last week I got a mild sunburn from being out for a campout.
Now we're huddled inside as the sun sets on 6 inches of accumulation of snow! Our kids were out playing in it earlier. This is only the second snow here- the first was just a dusting. Alisha was so disappointed during the last snow because she didn't get to build a snowman, so today she was thrilled to be able to get out in it.

The Artist Within #7
Go to a paint store. Collect 'chips' of all your favorite colors.
So I spent the day roaming around Lowe's and Home Depot. I brought home this HUGE pile of paint swatches. I have used the paint chips in the past as ATC and postcard backgrounds, but was running low. This gave me the perfect oportunity to stock up again.
My favorite colors are blue and purple, but I love bright-bold rainbows as well.
